NO BUDDY LEFT BEHIND : Helping soldiers keep their pets Rescind General Order-1A provision against animals

From the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, we hear the heartwarming stories of Cinnamon, Lava, Charlie, Boo and Ratchet. They are the dogs of war - pets and mascots of our American soldiers who have rescued and cared for these animals trapped in the chaos of human conflict.

We also hear the tales of heartbreak. The pets and mascots of our soldiers are fugitives - victims a military order that requires the killing of animals harbored by American soldiers in combat zones.

Army Spc. Gwen Beberg rescued a homeless puppy from a burning pile of trash while on active duty in Iraq last May and named the puppy Ratchet. She says she could have not made it through her 13-month deployment without the companionship of Ratchet. But, Ratchet needed to be rescued a second time - this time from the United States military.

General Order 1A prohibits conduct that compromises characters and morale. This also includes a strict prohibition on the keeping of pets, even though soldiers’ pets provide immeasurable comfort and would clearly enhance morale, not compromise it.

Pitbull Burnt AliveThis insert was in the Daily Voice Newspaper telling of a Pit Bull named Tammy who was burnt to death by her owners!

The owners wanted to punish her for jumping over the wall into their neighbors garden, so they fetched her and put her in her kennel and doused it with petrol and set it alight!!

Tammy was only found a few days later by Animal Welfare workers who wept when they saw her. Tammy had sustained such severe burns to her legs, belly and face, she was also blinded by the fire. The SPCA had to euthanize Tammy because she was just in too much pain.

An alert from Patti Stinson of today (9/13/08) is below;

This is long, but it is very useful and may result in saving lives of many rescued animals. Please read on.

A Forever Home Rescue Foundation, a rescue organization headquartered in Fairfax County with a superb record of re-homing animals and a significant network of foster homes, sent out a press release this week which notes that its foster homes have been cited for zoning violations in both Fairfax and Arlington counties.

In Patti’s alert, under her heading of “What you should do NOW”, she mentions that press release. For various reasons, that press release cannot be attached; instead, it appears at the very end of this.

If you are a resident of Fairfax or Arlington counties, make immediate and numerous contacts to those listed below.

If you reside in a Virginia jurisdiction other than Arlington or Fairfax, after sending emails in support of Arlington and Fairfax, turn to your own. Address the County Administrator (or City Manager) for your area in addition to contacting your own State Delegate and State Senator. (If you are not sure who that is, send us an email that includes your exact street residence address - not a PO box - and zip code, and we will try to help.) Indicate there are cases in Arlington and Fairfax counties attempting to outlaw foster homes for dogs and cats by classifying those homes as commercial when they are no such thing. Warn that this is something which will not be tolerated in Arlington and Fairfax, and will not tolerate it in your own county/city.

Thank you for helping.

Lillian Clancy and Don Marro

_____

from Patti Stinson:

This is one of the most important emails I have written in 15 years of animal rescue.

Please bear with me. This email will be a bit long. You all know that I only use the word “Urgent” in extreme circumstances. This is urgent. It is crucial that you read this email carefully, understand it fully, and respond appropriately. This issue impacts whether you will be able to keep your rescue open.

Right now, this issue has a potential to impact ALL rescue groups and shelters in Fairfax County and Arlington County, VA. Should we lose the battle, it could impact not only every rescue and shelter in VA (and possibly nationwide at some point), but it could also impact other charitable organizations such as the Girl Scouts. It could shut all of them down, or seriously (and negatively) impact their operations.

By now, we all know the horrors of puppy mills, the mass commercial breeding facilities where the only bottom line is the almighty buck and the welfare of the dogs is basically non-existent. With the rate of euthanasia in this country, do we really needs half a million puppies being pumped out into pet stores when millions and millions are killed in shelters.

Good, bad or indifferent, when it comes to commercial breeders the dogs are still just breeding machines and the Hunte Corporation is one of the largest involved in commercial breeding. Often acting as a broker, they also have their share of breeding facilities and although they try to come off as such a wonderful and caring company, they are really no different than so many out there.

This year they are sponsoring ‘Breeders Conference’ on the 26-27 of September in Joplin, Missouri. Many of the original sponsors of the event have withdrawn support because of Hunte’s ties to puppy mills. One of their sponsor is Pfizer Animal Health and they have not. Please sign the petition to request they they also withdraw their support.

You can read the body of the Petition below, then take a moment to sign. Help to get the word out, send this to friends and family. Time is short and we need to make ourselves heard! Be a voice for the voiceless!

Pfizer: Don’t Sponsor Animal Cruelty!

The Hunte Corporation is the largest broker in the US of “misery puppies” - those sad products of puppy mills that end up for sale in pet stores. They try to stay out of the dirtiest part of the work themselves, instead acting as middlemen, brokering sales of puppies from puppy mills to pet stores.

Many of you may be familiar with the recent story out of Denver regarding BSL and Forrest the dog. If you’re not, please take a moment to read the background;

In reaction to BSL and specifically to the case of Forrest and his owner, Chris McGahey, ROVERlution has created a petition to Boycott Denver until the Breed Ban Ordinance is repealed. Please read the body of the petition below then sign the petition. We need every voice to shout out for this injustice!!

Spend No Dollars in Denver, Colorado

In honor of Forrest and all dogs in Denver facing breed extermination, We the undersigned make Denver this promise: We will keep our dollars out of Denver until the repeal of your breed ban ordinance [sec 8-55 Municipal Code].

As a misguided public safety measure, Denver’s breed ban mandates the confiscation and killing of any dog fitting the description of a “pit bull” or a mixed breed dog having the physical characteristics of a “pit bull.” Since May 2005, Denver has ordered and carried out the killing of more than 1,700 dogs merely because they were, or looked like, a “pit bull.”

Even friendly, non-aggressive family dogs, like Forrest, belonging to the McGahey family, do not escape Denver’s death warrant. When Denver Animal Control picked up Forrest, a lost dog from Adams County (borders Denver city limits) in July 2008, Chris McGahey was forced to hire an attorney to keep Denver from killing his dog. Forrest was incarcerated at the shelter for two months while Chris and his attorney Karen Breslin did everything possible to secure the release of Forrest. Pleading for Forrest’s return, Chris promised to move to Ft Collins (57 miles north of Denver), pay any fines, and never again visit the city of Denver.
